You Are Stardust (and So Am I)
I've always been a sci-fi nerd. Give me a good starship, a wormhole, a civilization thousands of years ahead of our own — I'm there. So, imagine my delight the first time I really sat with this fact: we are, quite literally, made of stars.
Stick with me, because this one's fun.
93% of the human body is made of star matter. The calcium in your bones, the iron in your blood, even the oxygen around us — all were forged inside stars. Some stars, billions of years ago, lived, burned, and exploded so spectacularly that their remains scattered across the galaxy... and eventually became everything we now know. Your morning coffee. Your dog. Even that plant on your desk you keep forgetting to water. All of it stemmed from the same ancient material.
And here's the part that gets me every time: we love to think of ourselves as separate from nature. Like we're up here in our office chairs and Zoom calls, and "nature" is an amorphous concept out there in a forest somewhere. But every material we've ever built with, every tool, every crane, every phone in every pocket, is just a rearrangement of the Earth and its materials. Metal that was once ore, ore that was once just rock, and elements in that rock have a history that stretches far beyond Earth itself. Humanity never left nature to build civilization; we just moved the furniture. We are not far from the stars at all; they're part of our very being.
Worlds within Worlds
Now here's the fact that really stopped me in my tracks: your brain holds about 86 billion neurons. Our own Milky Way galaxy holds somewhere between 100 and 400 billion stars. While the numbers aren't connected scientifically, just having them in the same general neighborhood is wild to think about. Two totally different kinds of "vast" — one inside a three-pound organ and one spanning over 100,000 light-years — landing in roughly the same order of magnitude. One is inside us. The other is almost too large to comprehend. And yet somehow, both numbers are oddly similar in scale.
I'm not a neuroscientist or an astrophysicist. I build cranes. I'm not dealing in brains or black holes. So, I won't pretend this proves some grand unified theory of everything. It's simply one of those comparisons that makes me stop and look at things a little differently. I don't think you need a physics degree to feel the goosebumps. The same brain trying to understand the universe is itself something equally astonishing, vast, and complex.
The “Overview Effect”
There's a name for the feeling this gives me. Astronauts who look back at Earth from space report something scientists call the “overview effect,” which is a sudden, physical sense of how small, fragile, and connected everything is, all at once. Many have come back fundamentally changed. They are less territorial. Less rattled by things that used to feel huge. More interested in joy, in people, in what actually matters. You don't need a rocket to feel that, though. Sometimes just sitting with the math — the 86 billion neurons in my head, those up to 400 billion stars in the sky — makes me realize how I am a combination of something incredibly rare and equally completely ordinary. This thought hits me the same right here on the ground as it would in the sky above.
That's the part I actually love most about all this. Not just "isn't the universe amazing," though it is. It's what it does to the feeling of being separate. When I really sit with this — that I'm made of the same stuff as the stars, as the ground, as the person next to me — I stop feeling like a small thing standing apart from everything else, and start feeling like a small thing that belongs to everything else. That's where the comfort comes from. Feeling small next to the universe doesn't shrink me. It loosens the grip of the deadline, the deal, the thing I said wrong in that meeting.
You are stardust. You are earth. You are one very small, very lucky arrangement of very old material, here for a short while and aware enough to appreciate it. Might as well enjoy it.
